Bae

Bae stared blankly at Diego as he argued his side of her case. She had heard most of his argument before. Much of it was what he had said in her first case. Therefore, she barely listened. Yet, she did pray. She silently prayed that this judge would hear every word that Diego was saying and that she would side with Diego’s words more than the prosecutor’s.

That day in court was long and draining. Diego called several character witnesses that spoke in her favor. However, as Bae listened, she recalled that they had all said those same favorable things about her in her previous case, and none of them had helped to get her a lighter sentence. Though the previous judge had been found negligent in giving black and brown defendants heavier sentences, there was no telling if there were any prejudices in the heart of Judge Bishop. Just because she was brown and female did not ensure that there were no prejudices in her heart for hood girls that had committed murder.

After three hours of testimony, Diego finally rested his case.

“Let’s recess for thirty days,” Judge Bishop announced. “I will give my decision then.”

“More waiting,” Bae mumbled under her breath.

Bae watched Judge Bishop as she banged her gavel to see if she saw any inkling of what she was thinking. Yet, as the gavel collided with the sound block, Bae saw nothing in Judge Bishop’s face, except the same blank expression that she had herself.

Diego began to give her hope, with his kind, encouraging words as he collected his files, paperwork, and briefcase. Behind his words, she could hear shuffling of the spectators who were leaving as well. However, their shuffling and conversations soon began to sound like chaos and grew louder than what Diego was saying.

“Bitch, your daughter doesn’t deserve to get out of jail! I hope she die in prison!”

Bae’s head whipped around to see Kenya’s mother angrily spewing in Irene’s face. Behind them, she saw Snow making storming strides towards the chaos from the back of the courtroom.

Bae’s stomach began to roll into anxious knots as she watched Irene close the space between herself and Kenya’s mom. “Your daughter would have never gotten stabbed had she not been jumping somebody. You raised her to do that type of shit?!”

Instinctively, Bae attempted to take off towards the altercation just as the two mothers started to shove one another.

“No, Bae.” However, Diego had discreetly held Bae back just as the two women started to fight.

Bailiffs began to run towards the women that were tussling and screaming obscenities at one another.

“Let me go,” Bae urged.

Bae’s heart began to beat feverishly as she saw Snow force her way through the crowd that was now surrounding the two women.

“You can not go over there,” Diego told Bae sternly.

She gave him pleading eyes as she asked him, “You expect me to stand here while my mother is fighting? This is all happening because of me.”

“And if
